THE ROCKETEER: THE GREAT RACE Comic Book celebrates the high-flying adventurer’s 40th anniversary

‘Rocketeer Month’ pays homage to the legacy of Rocketeer creator Dave Stevens with an all-new miniseries and Encore printing of The Rocketeer Artist’s Edition

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (January 20, 2022) – This month of April, SDI invites pulp adventure fans on a transatlantic journey in The Rocketeer: The Great Race! An all-new four-issue comic book miniseries commemorating 40 years of Dave Stevens’ iconic hero, The big race reached stratospheric heights thanks to New York Times successful writer/artist Stephen Mooney!

“Write and draw a Rocket book has long been something of a to-do list item for me. I grew up with Dave Stevens’ unique blend of bravery and luscious adventure with Cliff, Betty and Peevy, and those seminal issues are still one of my favorite shows of all time,” says Mooney. “It’s incredibly daunting and yet also fantastically exciting and challenging. Let’s soar to the sky!”

In The big race, stunt driver Cliff Secord returns to a West Coast steeped in paranoia over impending war in Europe. Having finally had enough of his near-death scratches as a high-flying Rocketeer, the only thing in Cliff’s sights is a prestigious, winning air race that takes place from California to France! Maybe it’s finally time to get dressed and fly straight… taking his best girl Betty to Paris! But other parties want to win the race for their own nefarious ends, and Cliff will have to decide which prize is truly the most valuable of all.

As a bonus, each issue of The Rocketeer: The Great Race will contain an oral history featuring the friends, family and fellow artists of Dave Stevens, all brought together by Kelvin Mao, the director of the next documentary on the beloved artist!

“Stephen Mooney has a love and affinity for The Rocket, and the time period inhabited by the iconic character… all of this is abundantly evident in the story he crafted,” says the editor. Scott Dunbier. “It’s a fun adventure, one that Dave Stevens would enjoy, I think!”

The first issue of The Rocketeer: The Great Race will be available with multiple cover variations for retailers and fans, including Cover A by Gabriel Rodriguez (of locke and key fame), Cover B by Stephen Mooney himself, a Blank Sketch edition for Cover C (which fans can illustrate themselves or have their favorite artists draw), and a Retailer Incentive edition with blank artwork by Rodríguez.

April 2022 marks the 40th anniversary of The Rocketdebuted as a backup feature in 1982 star killer #2. In addition to The big race, IDW will celebrate “Rocket Month” with a callback output of Dave Stevens’ The Rocketeer Artist’s Edition, a new printing of the inaugural release in IDW’s multi-award-winning line of artists’ editions. Long out of print, this completely redesigned reissue of the long-sold Artist’s Edition reproduces an integral work of comic book history, meticulously digitized from the original art.

Daniel Pickett

AFi’s founder and editor, Daniel “Julius Marx” Pickett, has been around toys his entire life. The first line he ever collected was Mego’s World’s Greatest Superhero line in the 70s. He’s been surrounded by collectibles ever since. In 1999 he was baffled by a lack of information and news about some of his favorite lines of toys he collected. Since he couldn’t find the information, he decided to search for it himself, thinking that other people might also be interested in the same news. He started writing a weekly column on the toy industry and an action figure for a toy news site and within a year he tripled the site’s daily traffic with his updates, reviews and features. of products. He has established relationships with all the major toy manufacturers and many sculptors, painters and mold makers. He has turned his hobby into a global expertise that the industry has embraced. In 2004 he teamed up with his toy buddy Jason “ToyOtter” Geyer and they started their own website Daniel has been quoted both in the industry and in the mass media. Over the years, Daniel and AFi have been sought after as experts in the field. Daniel has been regularly featured on “Attack of the Show” on the G4 Network as a top contributor to their “Mint On Card” segment, and our homepage has been linked to USA’s “Pop Candy” blog twice. Today. Daniel’s content has also been featured on Bloomberg News,,, The Wall Street Journal, The Saturday Evening Post,,,, Boing-Boing, Gizmodo .com, Ain’t It Cool News, the official Star Wars blog, Geekologie, G4, CNet, and Toy Fare magazine, among many others. He has consulted on toy lines, books, documentaries and TV shows. But it all sounds really cocky and “tootin’ his own horn” – basically it’s that Daniel loves toys and LOVES talking about them.
